Touch is the very first sense we acquire as human beings. Research has shown that without healthy affectionate touch, babies don’t gain weight and are less responsive, and children lack the ability to develop adaptive social skills and can be prone to aggressive behavior. As adults, through social cues we learn that it isn’t “normal” to be touchy-feely with people. With our fast paced lifestyles and the addition of electronic gadgets (that really separate us from one another) we lack the amount of affectionate touch that allows us to thrive emotionally, physically and psychologically.
Professional Snuggling or Cuddling has come about due to the chronic deprivation of physical touch in our society today. As a coach I see a disconnect in people who have not experienced true loving, safe, respectful touch. Some push it away because of trauma around the subject of touching or for cultural reasons. As a self professed LOVER of snuggling, I want to be a part of our culture’s healing around this subject.
Snuggle Coaching provides a safe, contained space for a person to receive affectionate touch in a non-aggressive, non-sexual, non-judgmental way. Clear guidelines are set and agreed upon for every Snuggle Session and communication is ongoing. The client has the option of snuggling only (napping, resting, talking to someone who will listen with undivided attention) or adding a coaching element to the snuggling. This is similar to Yoga Coaching in the way that the body gives messages to us when we are present and listening.
Sometimes we just want to be held. It began in the womb, as our mother’s body cocooned us, fed us, kept us warm and safe. In life when we face hard times, scary decisions, unruly situations or people, it is comforting for someone to give us a hug, massage our shoulders or simply hold our hand. Snuggling can provide the missing element that supports us in our need for closeness, belonging and enjoying a fulfilling, balanced life.
